In the same vein, the mainstream music industry has seen the emergence of a multitude of potential stars who possess street smarts and musical talent. As a result, these have risen to prominence, making waves in the Afrobeat space. The Nigerian-influenced Afrobeat has become so viral that even UK artists of African origin are embracing the genre.
Judging from the impact of the new generation artists and their impressive projects, it is undeniable that the future of Afrobeat looks bright. With these young, talented acts keeping the fire burning with their timeless music, it is safe to say that they are the ones who will shape the future of Afrobeat.
Today we take a look at some of the raving Afrobeats artists in the Nigerian music industry and ask, “Is the future of Afrobeat sdependent on these artists?”
Rema
Rema is a young Nigerian musician signed to Marvin Records. He has been dubbed the leader of the next generation of Afrobeats and is known for combining trap and Afrobeats to create new sounds. In May 2021, he announced that his sound will be called “Afrorave”, which is a subgenre of Afrobeats with Arabian and Indian music infusion. Rema has released hit singles like Calm Down which featured Selena Gomez. He has topped charts world over with songs like Charm, Woman, Ginger, and Soundgasm. He has also collaborated with international artists like Justin Skye, JAE5, Mahalia, and Drake.
Ruger
Ruger is a young artist signed to D’Prince Jonzing World Records. He gained recognition in 2020 with his debut appearance and has been keeping up appearances since then. Ruger’s notable songs include “Asiwaju”, “Girlfriend”, “Bounce”, “One Shirt” featuring Rema, and “Lockdown” with featuring Burna Boy.
Zinoleesky
Zinoleesky, whose real name is Oniyide Azeez, is an Afrobeats singer and songwriter. He became popular as a voice of the street and is currently signed to Marlian Music. Despite being in the industry for only two years, he has made a name for himself and continues to release breathtaking songs. In 2021, he started with the release of “Kilofeshe Remix” featuring Mayorkun and Busiswa. This was followed by his official single “Naira Marley”. On October 8, he unleashed his second single titled “Gone Far” which has received massive love from his fans.
Ayra Starr
Marvin Records queen, Ayra Starr is an artist with a unique sound that blends R&B and Afrobeats. Her debut album “19 and Dangerous” showcases her versatility across all genres, and her lead single “Bloody Samaritan” has received airplay and made waves on several charts. Ayra Starr is making moves in the music industry and is an artist to watch out for.
Ayra Starr has since released hit songs like Rush, Sability, and Rhythm & Blues while featuring in chart-topping songs like “Won Da Mo”, “Ngozi”, and lots more.
Bella Shmurda
Bella Shmurda is an Afrobeats Prince with an indescribable rhythm that reflects genuine street realities. His street credibility has singled him out as one of the unifying factors who are hellbent on entertaining the public through his music. His top-notch singles include “Soldier Go”, “World”, “Party Next Door”, “Far Away”, “Lako”, “Champion”, “Moving Fast” and “Out There”.
Joeboy
Joeboy has emerged as an acclaimed artist this year, thanks to the release of his debut studio album “Somewhere Between Beauty & Magic” (SBBM). The album is a collection of classic songs that showcase his versatility and talent. As a result, similarities have been drawn between him and Rema in terms of who is the future of Afrobeats. However, Joeboy’s unique sound and style make him stand out, and Afrobeats resonates in his songs. His follow-up single “Alcohol” has been breaking ground, both locally and internationally. Without a doubt, he has earned a stamped spot as one of the Afrobeats ambassadors.
Ckay
Ckay gained popularity with his hit single “Love Nwantiti Remix”. He also ranked 10th among the best-selling Afrobeat artists in the world this year. The song has set records on streaming platforms with over 30 million listeners on Spotify and was certified gold in France.
Fireboy
Fireboy is a talented and dynamic Afrobeats artist who creates the right energy and vibes in his songs. He’s a gifted and poetic songwriter with a dedicated work ethic that speaks for itself in his music. Fireboy’s debut album “Laughter, Tears and Goosebumps” and his second album “Apollo” are proof that he is a big deal in the Nigerian music industry.
